Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize the arts as a means of expression. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her family, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of the home of a juror. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
